Dennis Lingane spent a lifetime in the media in the UK and Australia.
This book covers focuses on his media career in Western Australia. where he has lived and worked for the past 60 years. He says he never felt like he belonged, probably because he was always rushing off overseas to Japan, America, Europe and especially Ireland, where his ancestors, Guinness and Jameson whiskey were found in abundance.
In his previous autobiographical book “An Accidental Life” he made the point that while most people get a career and grow in it by experience and promotion, his career path was mostly dictated by being sacked after management disagreeableness and therefore expanding his working experiences.
In this, Volume 2, it is much the same as he bumbles through jobs in major
Australian newspapers, falling out with bosses and managers. Despite this, he succeeds in having a jolly time driving his vintage Bentley around the world and writing about important public issues including beer, pubs, consumer electronics, motor cars and travel, until finally finding his own footprint in retirement on acreage in the scenic South West of Western Australia.
This is another rollicking read about surviving in the swings and roundabouts of life in the media when it was awash with eccentrics and the emphasis on fun.
